The Mercosur countries have a rich biodiversity, they share a differentiated set of continental and marine ecoregions with great diversity of species of fauna, flora and microorganisms, in addition to an important hydrological complex.
Our countries also present an important cultural diversity, with indigenous and local communities, whose traditional knowledge and practices play a fundamental role in the conservation of biodiversity and its sustainable use, having developed their national biodiversity strategies in compliance with the provisions of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).
Biological diversity has intrinsic value and must be respected regardless of the value or use that could be attributed to it by human populations. Biodiversity must be used within the limit of ecosystem functioning, guaranteeing the continuity of ecological and evolutionary processes.
The Ministers and Secretaries of State of Environment of the States Parties to MERCOSUR, meeting in Curitiba, Brazil, on March 29, 2006, during the I Extraordinary Meeting of Ministers of the Environment of MERCOSUR, declared the Biodiversity Strategy of Mercosur.
